How Whole House Fans Work

Whole house fans use clean, fresh air to cool your home and expel hot, stale air, viruses, pathogens, odors and other indoor air pollutants out through your attic.

Whole house fans cool, clean and ventilate your home using a fresh air intake provided by open windows and doors.

Installed inside the attic, a whole house fan operates much like a vacuum cleaner by pulling hot, stale and polluted air from every surface inside your home through the ceiling grate, and expelling it out through the attic vents.

An optimized whole house fan system provides enough airflow to complete air exchanges on every level of your home every 3-4 minutes, creating a cooler, cleaner and more comfortable home environment.

Whole House Fans & Air Conditioners

Whole house fans dramatically reduce the strain on existing air conditioning systems through a process called "thermal mass cooling."

Thermal mass cooling is achieved when the surfaces of the walls, furniture and other objects inside your home are cooled with a source of fresh, cool air from outside. By cooling the entire mass of the home, whole house fans help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the day, reducing AC usage by as much as 50-90%.

Without a whole house fan, air conditioners are unable to achieve thermal mass cooling and may need to run for as many as 8 hours per day or more to combat the hot air trapped inside the home. This is why upper levels of a home remain hot and uncomfortable during the summer months, no matter how long the AC has been running.

Whole House Fans & Indoor Air Quality

Whole house fans greatly improve indoor air quality by replacing stale, polluted indoor air with a source of fresh, clean air from the outdoors.

Allergens, pet dander, odors, viruses and pathogens are drawn into the attic through the ceiling grate and expelled through the attic vents in as little as 3-4 minutes. Without proper ventilation or constant cleaning, indoor air pollutants begin to accumulate on the surfaces inside your home and are more easily spread.

By providing a fresh air flow from the outdoors, whole house fans prevent the buildup of harmful allergens, viruses and bacteria caused by everyday tasks like cooking, showering and pets for a fraction of the cost of stand-alone air purifiers.
